# Set limits on what your agent can spend

> What a Stamped Mandate can limit, and why those limits can't change once you've signed.

A Stamped Mandate is the only way your agent gets to spend anything. Every mandate limits the same three things, and you see all three before you sign.

  <Step title="Your agent proposes the limits">
    When your agent asks you to authorise a purchase, it proposes:

    * **How much** — an amount, in a real currency.
    * **What it's for** — a plain-language statement of what the mandate covers, plus any conditions attached to it (a price ceiling, which sellers qualify, a delivery deadline).
    * **How long it lasts** — an expiry. After that point, the mandate can no longer be used, even if it was never fully spent.

    Once you sign, those three things are set. Your agent cannot raise the amount, widen what the mandate covers, or extend the expiry after the fact — it can only come back and ask you for a new mandate.
